TRADITION OF THOUSAND OF YEARS

The name ireneis a symbol of tradition going back thousand of years. In Greek tradition, the olive tree is the symbol of peace. The Greek goddess Eirene was the embodiment of the peaceful state. She was the daughter of Zeus and Themis. At war, she was used as a symbol of truce. Messengers who carried the truce treaty were holding an olive branch at their hand.

The ideogram R ideograms R symbolizes the olive oil and it is used in ancient tablets written in Linear A syllabic script. The ideogram carries on through the destruction of the Minoan civilization and we can find it in Mycenaean tablets written in Linear B syllabic script. Separation between olive oil, tree and fruit becomes apparent there since it is depicted as a flower with three petals. This is the reason three different ideograms are used.

In Minoan Crete, the olive tree appears as sacred. King Minos and his successors were among the first protectors of this sacred tree, which had a major impact at the economic growth of the civilization through trade.

Throughout the ages, olive oil became a basic ingredient in Greek diet. Homer called it “Liquid Gold” and Hippocrates cited it as a “Great Healer”. It was served abundantly in banquets. Moreover, frugality was the cornerstone of the Greek diet. The Mediterranean trifecta consisting of “wheat, olive oil and wine” adds to that mentality.

Our civilization travels through taste, flavor and color our ancestors trusted to us.
